Rosie’s Story – NHS Ayrshire & Arran Physiotherapist

Sheila Cowan

Physiotherapist

My name is Rosie McLuckie and I am a Band 5 rotational physiotherapist. I am currently on rotation within MSK outpatients at Ayrshire Central Hospital. I studied a 4 year undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise science and then progressed into a 2 year MSc Physiotherapy (pre-reg) degree at Glasgow Caledonian University. I qualified in December 2022.

While at school I struggled with making a decision on what I wanted to do. I decided to do an undergraduate degree in sport and exercise science which meant I had various options for jobs. It meant I also had the option to continue onto other degrees and physiotherapy was the one for me. I have always been a kind, caring, and positive person and I always enjoyed working with the public and trying to work with them to give them the best experience in life.

I undertook various shadowing experience while doing my undergraduate degree to help me gain an insight into physiotherapy and make sure it was the career for me- It was!  This also gave me an advantage during my application process as I was able discuss my understanding of physiotherapy and what a day in the life of a physiotherapist.

The MSc (pre-reg) was a fast paced degree. It is quite an intense programme and requires a good amount of self-study. We covered anatomy, respiratory, neurology, and so much more! It is a very interactive course and you work with your class mates a lot. It is challenging but worth it.

I absolutely love my job as a physiotherapist. As a rotational physiotherapist I get to change area that I work in every 6 months. This allows me to get a good understanding of all the areas of physiotherapy and helps me develop my career by gaining skills in different departments. It is a very rewarding job. I love getting to know patients and hearing all their stories and giving them ideas and skills to help improve their daily living.
