Stay safe and healthy this winter: Protect yourself and others

  • by NHSAAA

As winter approaches, NHS Ayrshire & Arran is urging members of the public to take simple steps to stay safe, healthy, and protect our communities. Seasonal illnesses, such as flu and COVID-19, can spread quickly, especially during the festive period when we gather with family and friends. Here’s how you can help:

Get your winter vaccines

Vaccination remains the best protection against serious illness from flu and COVID-19. If you’re eligible, make sure you attend your appointment or reschedule if not suitable before the holidays. It’s quick, free, and helps keep you and those around you safe. To find out more and to book your appointment, visit https://www.nhsaaa.net/services/services-a-z/vaccines/vaccine-programme/ Cross winter vaccines off your Christmas to-do list!

Know where to get help

Over winter, you may be more likely to need help from our services. Whatever your healthcare needs, we want to make sure you receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Our winter health hub explains the services available to you this winter and gives advice on how you can help us keep you and our NHS safe by using our services wisely. Before visiting the Emergency Department (ED) or your GP, check the best options for your care. Many issues can be resolved through NHS 24, local pharmacies, or minor injury units. Help keep everyone safe in our hospitals

We know how important it is to visit a relative or close friend who is in hospital, particularly at this time of year. But we ask that if you have any respiratory symptoms or feel unwell to postpone your visit until you feel better.

If you’re feeling unwell, especially with symptoms such as cough, fever, or stomach bugs, please do not visit hospitals or care homes. Instead, consider staying in touch through phone or video calls until you’re feeling better. This helps protect patients, as well as staff caring for patients.

Dr Crawford McGuffie, Medical Director for NHS Ayrshire & Arran, explains: “Like other Health Boards across Scotland, we’ve seen a sharp rise in viral respiratory infections, including flu, in both the community and our hospitals. This has put increased pressure on our hospital sites. This can result in delays for patients awaiting admission.

“Everyone has a role to play in protecting our services. By taking a few simple steps, you can help keep services running smoothly and protect those who need care most.

“First up, get your winter vaccines. They’re quick, free, and are still the best way to stop flu and COVID-19 from spreading. If you’re eligible, book yours now and tick it off your Christmas list. It’s a small action that makes a big difference.

“Remember to use our NHS services wisely. Not every cough or sprain needs a trip to the Emergency Department. NHS 24, local pharmacies and minor injury units are often the best first stop.

“Finally, if you’re feeling unwell, especially with coughs, fevers, or tummy bugs, please hold off visiting hospitals or care homes. A phone or video call is a great way to stay connected without putting others at risk. Doing your bit helps protect our NHS and ensures care is there for those who need it most.”
