A gentle reminder that Ayrshire & Arran Hospitals and their grounds are smoke‑free. It is the law that no one should smoke within 15 metres of any hospital building. The use of vapes (e-cigarettes) is also not permitted. Thank you for helping keep our sites healthier for everyone.
Planned Admissions: Quitting smoking or vaping before surgery reduces the risk of complications and supports a smoother recovery. You can ask for a referral to the Quit Your Way Service at your Hospital Pre‑Op appointment or call 0800 783 9132 to get started now.
Urgent Admissions: If you’re unexpectedly admitted to hospital, we know being in a non‑smoking environment can be challenging.
If you smoke or vape, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is available to help manage any withdrawals you may have. Please speak to ward staff.
Support to stop smoking or vaping is available throughout your stay. You can ask to be referred to Quit Your Way at any time. Our advisors will provide behavioural support, arrange NRT and if you sign up, you’ll leave with a one‑week supply of products. We’ll also continue to support you once you’re home.
Wound Management
- Smoking and vaping reduce oxygen to tissues. Nicotine causes blood vessels to narrow, which limits blood flow and oxygen delivery to a wound. Oxygen is essential for healing.
- Smoking and vaping slow down the healing process. People who smoke or vape often heal more slowly than non‑smokers.
- Smoking and vaping increase the risk of complications, including:
- wound breakdown
- infection
- poor scarring
- delayed or failed healing after surgery
- Nicotine affects collagen formation which is needed to close wounds and strengthen healing tissue.
- The body starts repairing quickly after stopping smoking. Even short‑term abstinence improves circulation and oxygen levels which can positively affect wound healing.
Stopping smoking or vaping at any point can improve wound outcomes. Using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is much safer than continuing to smoke or vape and helps manage withdrawal without the harmful toxins found in cigarettes or vapes.
