Diabetes and pregnancy

Pre-conception

If you have diabetes and are planning a pregnancy, you should speak with your healthcare team for advice.

If you’re already pregnant

It is important you inform your health care team as soon as possible.

Blood glucose targets are:

  • Fasting: <5.3mmols/L
  • Before meals: 4-6mmols/L
  • One hour after meals: <7.8mmols/L

You should take 5mg folic acid daily.

Throughout your pregnancy, you will:

  • be reviewed by the diabetes and antenatal team regularly
  • require regular eye screening
