What is Diabetes?
There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.
In Type 1 Diabetes you cannot make any insulin at all.
In Type 2 Diabetes the insulin you make either cannot work effectively or you cannot produce enough insulin naturally.
Other types of Diabetes include Gestational Diabetes, Type 3C, MODY, Latent Autoimmune Diabetes and Adults (LADA)
Symptoms of Diabetes
- Going to the toilet frequently
- Thirsty
- Tired
- Weight loss
- Prolonged wound healing
- Blurred vision
- Genital itching/thrush
Treatment of Diabetes
- Diet and Lifestyle
- Oral Medications
- Injectable Medications (GLP-1, Insulin*)
*Insulin is the only treatment for Type 1 Diabetes

Diabetes Week – 8 to 14 June 2026
The Diabetes Team will be hosting information stands on the following dates to help raise awareness about diabetes:
- University Hospital Ayr: Tuesday 9 June, 10am to 2:30pm
- University Hospital Crosshouse: Wednesday 10 June,10am to 2pm
