Dr Janet McKay

Dr Janet McKay RGN, MA(Hons), Dip prof studies, MSc, DNur 

Consultant Nurse Cardiac Care  

Caring for individuals with cardiac problems has been my focus for nearly 40 years. I have been particularly focused on developing services that provide individuals with the knowledge, support and care they need to reach their full potential. As part of that I have developed a team that has a wide range of advanced skills. My focus outside of work is swimming, travel, and family history.

Rehabilitation has been a passion of mine for many years, I love seeing Ayrshire people build their confidence back up and make changes to live healthier lives. I want to shape and be part of a service that has a range of staff skills so more people can benefit from our approach and expertise. Outside work I like cycling and a good cup of tea.

I have worked in the NHS for over 30 years and for the past 8 years have been a cardiac specialist nurse.  I have always had an interest in the heart even as a student so this is my dream job. I enjoy running 2-3days/week and walking my two very naughty black Labradors Murphy and Bailey.

My role entails helping to provide a service for all Cardiac Patient’s within Ayrshire and Arran. This includes from a physical, mental, emotional & professional perspective.

I have worked in Cardiology for many years and been part of the Cardiac Rehab team for 6 years. I enjoy providing patients with information about their condition and how to make positive lifestyle changes. I returned to university in September to start my clinical assessment module.

I have worked within the team for 12 years. I enjoy helping patients self-manage their condition, helping them feel more in control, not allowing their condition to overpower their life. In my spare time I am a volunteer Scottish athletics multi event coach for under 13’s.

I have worked as a Specialist Nurse for the last 10 years. Over this time my role within this diverse team of has developed to include clinical assessment and prescribing within a cardiac setting. I have a passion for caring for people with Heart Failure as well as having a special interest in patients with Inherited Cardiac Conditions.

I have been working in Ayrshire Cardiac Rehab for the last 17 years and have been involved with HARP since it began. I am especially interested in supporting people to develop their self-management skills when living with a long term condition. Outside of work, I endeavour to practice what I preach and am a keen runner and hillwalker in the good company of Breagha, my four legged companion!

I work in a large, fun multidisciplinary Cardiac Rehabilitation team within Ayrshire and Arran and have done for the last twenty six years. My job involves a lot of travel, bringing our outreach Cardiac and HARP programmes to patients living throughout Ayrshire and Arran. I also help people who have been affected by Covid offering support and advice for those recovering.

I am an experienced Physiotherapist who has been working with NHS Ayrshire & Arran since 2008. Over the years I have enjoyed working in a variety of different departments but jumped at the chance to join the cardiac rehab & HARP team in the summer of 2019. I love being a part of a patient’s journey and hope my experience, knowledge and skills can make that an easier one. I have a hectic home life where I am mum to 2 kids and a very energetic puppy. We love being outdoors and enjoy walks to the park and the beach nearby.

Being a physiotherapist in this team is a very rewarding job – I love hearing about the positive impact our service has made across Ayrshire!

I specialised in Cardiac Rehabilitation in 2003 then went on to lead a Weight Management Physiotherapy team in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Recently, I returned to Cardiac Rehabilitation at Ayrshire & Arran where I really enjoy assisting individuals to recover, maximise their physical potential and optimise their quality of life. I enjoy walking, cycling, Dairy Milk chocolate and having occasional dips in the sea.

As a physiotherapist within the team my main role is to help people live active healthy lives. I really enjoy supporting patients so they can return to their previous activities, start new activities and learn to become self-managers of their own conditions.

As consultant physiotherapist, I lead on research and evaluation for the service. As well as implementing local projects, I hold various national research roles in the field and have a special interest in heart failure.

Currently my role is supporting people both physically and psychologically within the Cardiac Rehab and HARP teams. I deliver short term occupational therapy (OT) interventions focussing on daily activities, life goals and most importantly what matters to the patient. The overall aim being to improve quality of life, feelings of wellbeing and life satisfaction.
