Radiotherapy

What is Radiotherapy?

Radiotherapy involves using radiation, typically x-rays, in order to treat cancer. The treatment can also be administered internally, referred to as internal radiotherapy. Alternatively, external radiotherapy is used which is from outside the body. The use of radiotherapy can help treat cancer, reduce the possibility of it returning, or reduce symptoms. Radiotherapy may be used solely as your treatment method or combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy or surgery. Your consultant will be able to guide you through your treatment plan.

How do I know if Radiotherapy is right for me?

Your consultant will discuss whether Radiotherapy is the right treatment for you. Whether you receive Radiotherapy is dependent on:

  • what type of cancer you have been diagnosed with
  • where the cancer is located in your body
  • any other cancer treatments (this includes treatments you have had in the past, are currently having or treatments that are scheduled for you in the future)
  • your general health

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Your consultant will give you advice on how to prepare for your appointment. After your radiotherapy, it is advisable to ensure you get plenty of rest.
