Chemotherapy

What is Chemotherapy?

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy involve the use of drugs to treat the disease by destroying cancer cells. This type of treatment works throughout your body and is called a systemic treatment. You may hear the terminology Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment, often abbreviated to SACT, this is the name given to anti-cancer drug treatments such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

How do I know if Chemotherapy is right for me?

Your consultant will discuss whether Chemotherapy is the right treatment for you. Whether you receive Chemotherapy and which Chemotherapy drugs you receive is dependent on:

  • what type of cancer you have been diagnosed with
  • the appearance of cancer cells under a microscope
  • whether the cancer has spread to other areas of your body
  • your general health

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Prior to attending for your Chemotherapy we strongly recommend that you watch our patient information video. The aim of this video is to help prepare you for your SACT by providing important information on what to expect, how to manage any side effects and who to contact if you need advice.

Before receiving your SACT the chemotherapy team will ensure that you have understood the content of the video and discuss any questions or concerns you may have after watching the video.
