Community Learning Disability Physiotherapy Team
About us
We are a small, community based team covering North, South and East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnerships. There are three teams, one for each geographical area.
We work within the Community Learning Disability Teams, which include nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, speech and language therapists, dieticians and social workers.
What is a learning disability?
A learning disability is a significant life long experience that has three components:
- Reduced global ability to understand new or complex information or to learn new skills
- Reduced ability to cope independently
- Onset before adulthood with lasting effect to the individual’s development.
Individuals with a learning disability have an IQ of less than 70.
What do physiotherapists in Learning Disability Services do?
Learning disability physiotherapists provide specialist assessment, treatment and management to adults with a learning disability whose needs cannot be successfully met by mainstream services, even when reasonable adjustments are made (ACPPLD 2023).
Who can we help?
Adults aged 16 or over who have left school, have a diagnosed learning disability and whose needs cannot be successfully met by mainstream services.

Referrals are accepted from all Health and Social Care professionals, staff working for care providers, family members or patients themselves. Referrals should be completed on the relevant Community Learning Disability Team referral form and then emailed or posted to the relevant team:
