Weight Management

The Adult Weight Management service delivers a variety of programmes across Ayrshire and Arran. These are suitable for all adults aged 18 years and above.

The programmes offer support for up to one year and include:

  • Exploration of factors that influence lifestyle choices and weight
  • Information, tips and strategies for nutrition, health and wellbeing
  • Activity sessions
  • Onward referral and signposting
  • Optional weigh ins

You can also follow us on Facebook, or download our Healthy Weight app which has lots of useful information on a wide variety of health related topics, tailored for the area of Ayrshire in which you live. There are regular updates and new weekly content.

Self management

If you would like to begin your own weight loss journey, the NHS Inform 12 week programme is a great place to start. This course will provide you with weekly topics to help you work towards achieving a healthy weight at a pace that suits you.

Diabetes prevention

The Adult Weight Management Service also delivers the Diabetes Prevention Programme, which offers support for anyone with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes (Impaired Fasting Glucose, and Impaired Glucose Tolerance), Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes within the last two years. 

Notice regarding weight loss medications

Liraglutide (Saxenda®)

This medication has been approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) to support weight management in NHS Scotland. However, due to national shortages, NHS Ayrshire & Arran are unable to start anyone on this medication.

Semaglutide (Wegovy®)

This medication has now been approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) to support weight management in NHS Scotland and a national clinical pathway is being developed. Until the pathway has been developed NHS Ayrshire & Arran are unable to start anyone on this medication

NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s public website will be updated when both medications are available.
