We provide placements for first through to fourth year students. Our main student placements are at
- University Hospital Ayr
- University Hospital Crosshouse
- Ayrshire Central Hospital
We also use Girvan Community and East Ayrshire Community Hospitals.
The Medical Imaging Department has a team of 228 staff and a budget of £7.5 million, it is modern and well equipped, with two 1.5 MR scanners, three 64-slice CT scanners, Ultrasound, Digital Fluoroscopy, Nuclear Medicine and Mammography. We have a range of general equipment including digital and computed radiography.
Before placement
Your University will have provided you with a handbook for the relevant placement prior to arrival. This will contain departmental information such as:
- advice on health and safety/fire/infection control
- equipment
- expectations
- main contacts in the department
- who to ask for on arrival
On arrival
Please report to reception and ask for the named radiographer as provided by the University.
Student support
- You will be given an induction and introduced to the staff.
- You will be issued with your own unique user id and log-in for the computers. This will allow you access to both the intranet and internet so that you can make good use of quiet times.
- Action plan – you will be provided with an ‘action plan’ to complete. This will allow you to record information to help in planning of the placement ahead. It will ask you to identify your goals (staged assessments), examinations you feel you may wish more practice in or any areas giving you concern. This information will be completely confidential between yourself and the Practice Education Team.
- Your placement experience will be very much ‘hands on’ and practical, with discussion and reflection as you complete examinations. You will receive encouragement and constructive feedback to help with your development and progression to more advanced examinations.
- You will be assigned to a named supervising radiographer for each session. This may be different from morning to afternoon, and day to day, due to the nature of our work.
- There are named assessors that will perform your staged assessments with you.
- The clinical liaison radiographer is always available to speak to and should be approached if you have any concerns or queries.
Duty hours
- Your rota will be issued by the University. Please be aware that we receive students from more than one University and therefore all students will be working different hours on different days, dependent on clinical need and level.
- Please ensure that you complete all of your rostered hours.

Please remember that while anonymous, feedback is given to the team and is also viewed by the AHP team. Therefore any comments made are expected to be kept professional at all times.
