DAFNE

What is DAFNE?

Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE)

The aim of DAFNE is to allow Adults with Type 1 diabetes to maintain a normal lifestyle, whilst keeping blood glucose levels within a healthy target, in order to reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications.

Where do I participate in DAFNE?

NHS Ayrshire & Arran provides the remote DAFNE course, in conjunction with the Open University.

The Remote DAFNE course includes online learning from home each week, in addition to a weekly support call with your peers and DAFNE educators, via NHS Attend Anywhere.

This allows participants to fit their learning around their work and home commitments.

Why do DAFNE?

DAFNE has been proven to:

  • Improve glucose levels
  • Reduce hospital admission
  • Improve carbohydrate counting skills
  • Allows flexibility and choice with diet and exercise
  • Reduce risk of Diabetic Keto Acidosis (DKA)
  • Reduce risk of severe hypoglycaemia
  • Aids self-management
  • Improve Quality of life
  • Reduce the risk of developing complications of diabetes

Who can take part in DAFNE?

Any Adult with Type 1 diabetes.

When can I take part in DAFNE?

Remote DAFNE runs continuously throughout the year, in order to allow individuals to choose the course which best suits their lifestyle.

Your first meeting with your DAFNE educators will be to gather your pre course information and be provided with all your course information. This is normally 2 weeks prior to your course start date.

Remote DAFNE support calls run weekly over 6 weeks.

Home learning of 2-7 hours per week is required in addition to your weekly support call.

A follow up support call, approximately 6-8 weeks after the online weekly session, will complete the course.

How do I sign up?

If you wish to take part in one of our DAFNE courses, please contact NHS Ayrshire & Arran Diabetes Team on 01563 827642
