Health board asks patients and visitors to plan travel ahead of hospital visits

Car parking at University Hospital Crosshouse

NHS Ayrshire & Arran is encouraging patients and visitors travelling to University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC) to plan their journeys in advance and consider alternative transport options due to ongoing parking pressures on site.

Fraser Bell, Assistant Director of Programmes for NHS Ayrshire & Arran, said:  “We know parking at UHC can be difficult during busy times and appreciate the frustration this causes. Over the years we’ve increased the number of parking spaces and improved car park management, but the site has now reached full capacity and no further expansion is possible.

“Our hospital sites are well served by regular bus routes, and we encourage people to use public transport where suitable, while recognising this may not be possible for those with specific needs.”

To support fair access, Ayrshire Roads Alliance continues to manage drop‑off zones and disabled bays to ensure they are used appropriately.

Weekday parking pressures have increased due to higher patient activity, extended visiting hours and the temporary installation of a second Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) vehicle on site until March 2026. This essential equipment supports improved clinical services but has reduced parking capacity in the short term.

Fraser added, “As part of our wider climate and sustainability commitments, we are promoting alternatives to car travel and working with partners to improve walking, cycling and public transport access. We will continue to consider community feedback as we plan long‑term, sustainable improvements.”
