Childsmile is celebrating a remarkable milestone – 20 years of improving the oral health of children and families across Scotland.
Since its launch, NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Childsmile team has brought together education staff, health visitors, dental teams, oral health professionals, support workers and community partners with a shared goal: giving every child the best possible start in life through improved oral health.
Over the past two decades, the programme has been supporting families from infancy through childhood and helping to create lasting improvements in children’s oral health outcomes. From supervised toothbrushing programmes in nurseries and schools to community-based support and preventive dental care, Childsmile’s impact has been felt in communities across Ayrshire.
This anniversary is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate all the dedicated professionals whose commitment, collaboration and passion have made Childsmile in Ayrshire what it is today.
Claire Straiton Dental Services Service Manager said, “As we celebrate 20 years of Childsmile, we want to thank everyone who has contributed to this incredible journey. Whether working directly with families, delivering care in schools and clinics, or supporting the programme behind the scenes, you have helped create thousands of healthy smiles and brighter futures.
“The success of Childsmile has been built on strong partnerships and a shared commitment to reducing health inequalities and improving children’s oral health. The programme continues to play a vital role in supporting children and families, ensuring preventive oral healthcare remains accessible to those who need it most.”
As Childsmile marks its twentieth anniversary, the programme looks forward to continuing its mission for many years to come. Working together to create healthier smiles, healthier habits and healthier futures for Ayrshire’s children.
