NHS Ayrshire & Arran Stroke Consultant Dr Sandip Kumar Ghosh has been awarded the notable Willam Cullen Prize by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Clinical Service.
In a career spanning five decades, he has spent over forty years in Ayrshire, working in numerous areas including respiratory, general internal, geriatric and stroke medicine. Since 1997, he has worked with relentless energy, skill and passion to pioneer the high-quality acute stroke and rehabilitation services currently available to local patients.
Professor Mark Strachan, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said: “The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh is delighted to recognise Dr Ghosh’s notable contribution to advancing stroke medicine in NHS Ayrshire & Arran through the award of our Cullen Prize. He has demonstrated a real commitment to research and innovation in stroke care to the benefit of patients and is also an effective teacher who supports the development of colleagues to strengthen clinical practice across the service.
“Since the College established the Cullen Prize in 2016 we have been very pleased to work with NHS Boards like NHS Ayrshire & Arran to celebrate clinical excellence in service innovation and teaching and we look forward to continuing to recognise and support outstanding contributions to patient care across Scotland.”
Dr Ghosh received his award at a special presentation at University Hospital Ayr recently.
Reacting to the news, Dr Ghosh said: “Receiving this award was an utter surprise and I never imagined I would be nominated for the Cullen Prize; it is an absolute honour.
“I love my role here at NHS Ayrshire & Arran and over the years I have been involved in countless interesting and diverse areas of medicine, with my particular interest being specialist stroke care. I’ve worked with some truly fantastic people who have helped me in so many ways, and I hope together we have made a difference for our patients. I consider myself really fortunate to work here in Ayrshire, where I have made my home. Thank you to the RCPE and my colleagues at NHS Ayrshire & Arran for this unexpected and welcome recognition.”
Congratulating Dr Ghosh, NHS Ayrshire & Arran Medical Director Dr Crawford McGuffie said: “For almost thirty years Sandip has led and developed stroke medicine here in Ayrshire. From the early adoption of acute thrombolysis to the centralisation of stroke services to achieve national standards, and to the ongoing optimisation of post-stroke rehabilitation, Dr Ghosh has consistently been at the forefront of progress. “At NHS Ayrshire & Arran we have benefitted from his immense clinical knowledge, unwavering commitment to patient care, extraordinary work ethic and dedication to continuous professional development. His motivation has always been to provide the very best care for patients. I congratulate him as a very deserving recipient of the prestigious Cullen Prize.”
