Paediatric Physiotherapy

About us

We are a small, community based team covering North, South and East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnerships.  There are 3 teams, one for each geographical area. Our clinics are based at a number of locations including Rainbow House in Irvine and Arrol Park in Ayr.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that promotes the health and wellbeing of all.  Physiotherapists are responsible for the assessment and physical management of problems due to accident, injury, ageing, disease or disability.

What is paediatric physiotherapy?

Paediatric physiotherapy is the treatment and care of babies, children and young people from birth to 18 years or school leaving age.  Paediatric physiotherapists bring their specialist skills as physiotherapists and have additional expert knowledge and experience of child development and of childhood disabilities.”Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists, January 2018″

What do Paediatric physiotherapists do?

We work in partnership with families, schools and other health professionals to help children and young people maximise their physical abilities, health and wellbeing. This may mean working with you and your child at clinics, at home, at nursery or at school.

Being Active

Physical activity guidelines

Providing your child with regular opportunities to be physically active from birth will help them to develop strong bones and muscles, good balance skills and to maintain a healthy weight.

The Scottish Government’s current guidelines suggest that children under 5, who are not yet walking, should minimise the time they spend sitting still. Follow this link for recommended activities.

Children under 5, who are able to walk, should be physically active for at least 180 minutes, spread throughout each day. Follow this link for recommended activities.
