A gruelling six-day race has helped raise an amazing £1,160 to support patients cared for in the Stroke Unit, University Hospital Crosshouse.

Callum Laird from New Cumnock took on the Dragon’s Back Race, raising the impressive sum thanks to the generosity of family, friends and supporters.

The race is 236 miles long, with an ascent of 50,000 feet, and stretches across from Conwy in the north of Wales to Cardiff in the south.

Callum chose the Stroke Unit, as some of his friends had received care there. He visited the ward to hand over the donation.

Christine Somerville, Senior Charge Nurse, Ward 3E, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Callum for taking on such an impressive challenge and choosing to support our ward. Raising £1,160 is a fantastic achievement and we would also like to thank everyone who generously supported him.

“The donation will be used to enhance the experience of patients while they are in our care, helping us make their time on the ward as comfortable and positive as possible. On behalf of our patients and the whole team, I would like to say a huge thank you to Callum.”

Callum said he was delighted that his fundraising would benefit the ward and wanted to thank everyone whose donations helped him reach the fantastic total.
