If you have a skin condition that both you and your GP are struggling to manage, the next step is usually to see a specialist.
Your GP can refer you to a dermatologist (a doctor who specialises in skin conditions) when:
- the diagnosis isn’t clear
- treatments aren’t working
- the condition is severe, persistent, or affecting your quality of life
The Dermatology service provides specialist care for adults and children with a wide range of acute and chronic skin conditions.
We offer routine and urgent assessment, investigation and treatment for conditions including:
- skin cancer and suspicious lesions
- eczema and psoriasis
- acne, rosacea and urticaria (hives)
- hair and blistering disorders
Please note, we do not see patients for purely cosmetic concerns or provide aesthetic treatments.
Our team and services
We deliver care across University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr.
Our experienced team is made up of:
- consultants
- specialty doctors
- GPs with a specialist interest
- skin cancer nurse specialist
- nurse practitioners
- nurses
- a pharmacist
We run over 30 outpatient clinics each week and see around 10,000 new patients annually.
Clinics are held on various days in:
- Ward 2E and the Maxwell Suite in University Hospital Crosshouse
- the Heathfield Suite in University Hospital Ayr
Services include:
- skin surgery
- phototherapy and photodynamic therapy
- patch testing
- Day Unit treatments and dressings
We also provide inpatient care and are active in teaching and training.
Referrals
If you are concerned about a skin condition or lesion, please speak to your GP. Referrals are required to access our service, helping us ensure fair and timely care for all patients.
