A former patient has kindly donated £300 to the Acute Stroke ward at University Hospital Crosshouse to thank staff and raise awareness of the vital services supporting stroke patients across Ayrshire.
Joann Allan, from East Ayrshire, suffered a stroke in February 2025 while volunteering at the University Hospital Crosshouse café. Thanks to the quick thinking of other volunteers, she was quickly taken to the emergency department and later treated for a stroke.
In March this year, Joann decided to organise a sponsored five‑kilometre walk along the river route between Galston and Newmilns, with support from family, friends, and the wider community. The idea for the walk came about through her local stroke support group, which encourages positive goal‑setting. Joann wanted to take the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for stroke services in Ayrshire.
Joann said, “Though my walking is slow, I managed to accomplish the walk along the river. Thanks to everyone’s support and the generosity of those who donated, I have managed to raise £300 for the Acute Stroke Unit.
“I want to also thank the specialist acute stroke care staff and rehabilitation services, including the physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and community wellbeing programmes. All of these services have played a critical role in supporting me in my recovery.”
Senior Charge Nurse, Christine Somerville added, “On behalf of everyone on the ward and the extended services, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for this generous donation. Funds raised through community initiatives like this make a real difference to our patients and staff, and we are extremely grateful for the time, effort and support shown.
“This contribution will help us continue to provide the highest possible standard of care to patients in the Acute Stroke Unit.
“It is great to see how well Joann is doing after her stroke, and the progress she has made in her recovery.”
