Diabetes Prevention

The Adult Weight Management Team delivers the Diabetes Prevention Programme (DPP).

DPP is open to anyone over 18 years old with a diagnosis of:

  • Pre-diabetes (HbA1c between 42-47mmol/mol) or Impaired Fasting/Glucose/Impaired Glucose Intolerance*
  • Gestational Diabetes (GDM) within the last 2 years**
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – newly referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

The DPP can help you:

  • Understand your risk of Type 2 Diabetes
  • Build healthy eating habits
  • Find practical ways to stay active
  • Access ongoing support and follow-up care, for example: weight management, smoking cessation and physical activity

People referred to DPP are offered:

  • An initial consultation (30 minutes)
  • Group education: Prevent It (3 hours)
  • 6-month review (15 minutes)
  • 12-month review (30 minutes)

DPP can offer face-to-face , telephone or virtual appointments via Attend Anywhere (web-camera required). If you require a language interpreter for your appointment, our team will arrange this for you in advance.

We can offer groups on Tuesdays and Fridays, either in the morning (09:30-12:30) or afternoon (13:00-16:00). We are currently preparing for groups in:

  • Kilmarnock
  • Ayr
  • Troon
  • Irvine
  • Kilwinning
  • Largs
  • Arran

*Referrals to DPP must be completed by a Health Care Professional such as your GP, Practice Nurse or Pharmacist via SCI Gateway.

**If you have recently been diagnosed with GDM, you may self-refer to DPP.
