Mr John Callaghan

Employee Director John Callaghan has worked exclusively for the
NHS in Ayrshire and Arran since he graduated as a Podiatrist in
1976, a career lasting some 35 years to date. John began working as
a clinician in Ayr in a variety of settings, covering hospital and
community-based activity.
He has been heavily involved in local trades union and
industrial relations activity since 1982, first as a local
workplace steward, followed by more prominent roles within the NHS.
During that time he has experienced a significant number of
organisational changes. John is national lead within his profession
on a number of national bodies and represents Scottish Podiatrists
on a number of UK-based committees.
He chaired the local staff-side group in the former Primary Care
Trust since 1997, and has been Chair of the Area Partnership Forum
(APF) since it was first formed in 1999. In October 2001 he was
elected by staff-side colleagues to be appointed as a member of the
NHS Board.
John has a particular interest in workforce planning and is a
moderniser by nature. John has a key role in championing the
delivery of the Staff Governance Standards and has a keen desire to
eliminate all forms of discrimination wherever identified, looking
to create fairness and equity across all staff groups.
John is married with two grown-up children. His interests
include travel, all things sporting, music, walking and gardening
as well as supporting Kilmarnock FC. His main ambition is to visit
as many countries in the world as possible and to read all the
books bought but as yet unread in his collection.
