Speech and language therapy

Service overview

Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and Assistants (SLTAs) work in hospitals (inpatients and outpatients), community clinics, family centres, schools, nurseries, day centres, people’s own homes and increasingly across communities.

SLTs support adults, children and their families, as well as other professionals and agencies to reduce the impact that speech, language, communication, and swallowing difficulties have on daily life.

We help people to reach their best potential when communicating and/or eating drinking and swallowing. We also help relatives, carers and other people to better understand each individual’s needs and how to manage them in their own environments. As SLTs, we provide reassurance, advice, information about other services, and where appropriate, assessment and intervention.

We work in partnership with the East, North and South Health and Social Care Partnerships, local education departments, care providers, and voluntary and charitable organizations.

There is a speech and language therapy section on the NHS A&A app where you can access a range of resources related to Speech, Language, Communication and Swallowing difficulties experienced by children, young people and adults.

We provide support in 4 main areas. To learn more about how we may be able to help click on the sections below:
