Prosthetics and Orthotics

The prosthetic service for NHS Ayrshire & Arran is provided by WestMARC, based at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. Visit the WestMARC webpage for more information.

Prosthetists are registered healthcare professionals who specialise in prosthetic (artificial) limbs and the treatment of those with limb loss or absence. They are responsible for the assessment, prescription, measurement, design, fit, supply and review of prosthetic limbs for patients.

Orthotists are registered healthcare professionals who specialise in the assessment of the whole body for biomechanical problems and if appropriate may prescribe, measure, fit or review, an orthosis.

An orthosis is an externally applied device. It may also be called a ‘brace’, ‘splint’, or ‘orthotic’. An orthosis can improve function, reduce pain, prevent deformity.
