Additional work

Statement by Liz Moore, Director for Acute Services

NHS Ayrshire & Arran is committed to ensuring safe and effective care for our patients.

Surgical consultants carry out a range of clinical duties in additional to performing surgery. All surgeons are paid the nationally agreed scale for their grade.

Surgeons, as with other clinical staff, can be offered additional sessions. These sessions which will be carried out over and above their contracted hours can include inpatient ward work (including ward rounds and elective procedures), daycase work, outpatient clinics and performing diagnostic tests. These sessions do not necessarily have to be carried out after ‘normal working hours’. Sessions can be filled to cover colleagues absences or to utilise a theatre which is not in use.

Sessions are four hour periods and the standard cost is £607.39.
